Summary of the Course Objectives
For fifteen weeks, eighteen students, one teacher and one honors adviser studied away. We read excerpts from books, research articles, a novel, and our textbook. We discussed these different sources in class and wrote about them every week. We immersed ourselves in everything World War Two, covering the events leading up to the war and a few years after. And finally, after our fifteen weeks of study we spent one week abroad exploring what we learned in person and exploring parts of France and England.
World War Two was the second total war. A war in which the nations involved did not only fight with armies. Each nation involved used their industry and the power of their economies to fight this war. Dr. Zalar, our instructor, challenged us each week to read and comprehend as much as we could about the total war that WWII was. This was not the typical "American" view of the war. As a student in this class, each of us gained a global understanding of World War Two. We studied the ideology, culture, and politics of World War II until the cows came home.
One of my career goals is to travel and help other people throughout the world. I would at least like to travel some and help where I can before I settle down at some point. One of the reasons that I took this class was so that I could travel. I have never been to England or France and this seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to travel and learn about something that I hadn't studied before hand. This was one of the first classes that I have taken at UC that was outside of my required major courses. But thankfully my dad is a history buff, so even though I haven't studied WWII in detail I have grown up learning a lot about the history of the world. Even so, I was excited to learn more about World War II because it was such a momentous event in history and I felt like I had a very closed view about it. Included in the other pages of this section of the website are pictures from our trip and some of my writing from the class. There is also a link to a website that has a compilation of the works that my classmates and I wrote for this class. This was our "class project" that we completed for the JC Honors and International department. Hope you enjoy looking around!
